VR6 Rear brake conversion..
« on: 23 April 2009, 17:30 »
howdi y'all

Looking at upgrading the rather shoddy brakes on my mk3 TDI!

Hoping to get (as the title suggests) brakes from a 1995 VR6 - the guy only has the rear brakes available as the fronts have sold - My questions are these, what bits do I need, will I be fine running rear vr6 discs/calipers etc and standard TDI (for the time being) at the front and how much is a fair price to pay for th rear setup?

Thanks!

get the entire rear beam. looking £50 with everything on i would have thought.

the gti/vr6 has built in anti roll bar and having the entire rear beam just makes life easier, as you can bolt yours off and bolt on the new one, and connect up the brake lines and handbrake cables.

not 100% about the mk3 tdi, but i think you may need vr6 handbrake cables. i needed to get gti ones as they are longer to suit the new beam. also not sure if the mk3 tdi is 4 or 5 stud? if its 4 stud and you want to keep it 4 stud, then you are going to need a set of mk2 gti discs.

the brakes are 226mm on the rear. would have thought it a sensible idea to get some 280 brakes at the front too. get some gti/vr6 280mm calipers/carriers and bolt them on. once again, if you want to keep 4 stud you will need new discs, in which case you will need g60 front discs.

im currently doin this upgrade and keeping my car 4 stud btw.

Cheers for the info!

I'm on a 4-stud and would like to keep in that way!

no worries. just get yourself some g60 front discs and mk2 gti rear discs

im rebuilding the rear beam while its off. so stripped it down and replacing everything. also coating it all in hammerite. new bearings, discs, pads. need a flaring kit to do my hard lines. ohh and i got goodridge brake lines in black with stainless steel fixings

ohh the brake bias valve. yeah i heard this and that about using them. but i think you need to use it.

not sure if your current setup has one or if it does, if it can be used with 226mm disc brakes?

best off getting the one that goes with the vr6 rear beam and brakes your getting.

You should already have a brake bias valve as standard.

Why are wanting to switch to discs by the way.

I like them :)

The choice is yours but well set up drums are as good and a lot less hassle.

i will be running 230bhp, so need more stopping power. 280's at front, figured might as well throw them on the rear too, gotta be better than drums. ohh and i like them better too!

as for brake bias valve, are they all the same on the mk3? meaning i can just use the one on there and i dont need a new one?

:)
