could be your ecu's on its way oout, have encountered similar problems on my bor's mk2, replaced 2 ecu's so far, problem goes away for 2-3 months before returning. Last ECU has lasted 6 months +. If you have a mate who has a mk3 8v gti, then just swap the ecu's to see if the problem goes away before spending lots of money.

cheers for advice on ecu just had it on a diagnostic machine and thats saying theres no probs. then he tried it on a fault code reader and no fault codes had been recorded. The guy suggested giving the throttle body another right good clean as they can supposedly be quite tempramental. When i replaced each of the breather hoses though it stopped it cutting out for a week or two then it started to do it again - its weird!

changing ecu relays and fuel pump is probably next on my list - the cars worth spending a few quid on coz when its not cutting out it drives mint i just hope its nothing too serious but if it was, surely diagnostic machine would have picked it up wouldnt it !  phoned around and can get a fuel pump for ?40.00 plus vat so thats not too steep i dont think needless to say i never got a quote from v dub dealer theyll probably charge the earth !

Just change the relays first.

They are approx ?8 for the ECU and ?12 for the fuel pump relay.
Can check em first like i was told by running the car to warm then taking out the relays to see if they are warm or cold. If cold then change them.

Yeah been there sorted that. I got the mk3 2.0 8v gti(?). Its the THROTTLE CONTROL VALVE it will need to be cleaned out properly matey. I took mine to VW to sort as it was getting dangerous when and where it kept cutting out. Took them two days to find the problem. Nothing shows as being wrong when plugged to the diagnostic machine. Eventually they saw an irregular tick over and replaced it at a cost of ?260... that was without labour charges they didnt charge labour as it took them so long to find the problem. thank god for that they charge ?56ph.
