right if i fail to get hold of a gti box what other gear boxes can i use ? ive been offered a mk1 caddy box by a forum member i know ill lose top end speed but im not bothered about that just want to know if it will fit if not any othe boxes i can use ?

mk2 16v box will go on but you need a 16v clutch for it, various sciroccos cabbies, caddies and MK1s will also work. main issue is you need 100mm flanges on the box otherwise you'll have to take the old ones off and swap em, broke has a good how2:

also if you get an early box make sure it has the MK2 bracket holes on it, if you look at the oil change link on brokes site it shows the mk1 and mk2 mounting points :)

Be brave and dismantle the gearbox to see what broke and fix it.

found a website earlier that looks really helpful with rebuilding gearboxes www.brokevw.com i think so once its out and i have a temp replacment ill have a go at a recon on mine so fingers crossed

You could just take the end cap off the gearbox and have a look. If its just a case of a broken cog, but all else seems fine, then change the 5th gear. Can be done with gearbox still in the car and you can drag another set of cogs from another gearbox in the scrappies with a taller 5th gear. This way you will decrease the revs whilst in top gear, giving you better return on your MPG as well.
Obviously though, if the cogs are mashed, then there will be a load of debris floating around the gearbox, in which case, a swap is on the cards.
