Starting problems
« on: 28 July 2004, 00:00 »
Hi, new Golf owner (first time now converted?) however, the car is just about to go on the road and I have problems starting.  If it doesn't start first time and I give it some gas it then wont start at all.  Its a Mark 1 GTi Cabriolet (Y plate).  Is this normal?

Thanks

The car's beem in a lock up, so not rewally affectyed by weather.  It had a blast about 2 weeks ago, otherwise I have been finishing off the re-build of the body/fitting hood.  Got the battery on charge over night, however has a boost facility, which still did not get the engine started.

Does depressing the accelerator once  make these engines flood?

only if your fuel mixture is wrong you can adjust this will an allen key its the metering head

increase the tick over a notch you should rarely have to dip the peddle to start it.

Maybe leaky injectors and/or cold start valve.
Try leaving the cold start valve unplugged.

i had a prob similar with my mk1...the carb was flooding, that was why. apparently a former owner had replaced the carb with an earlier model that didnt have a return  :-\

or something like that anyway...

Had the battery on charge over night, cleaned all the plugs.

Have disconnected the cold start valve previously, however when re-connected it shot up to 3500rpm.

Think it just needs a good tune - will check the hose tomotrrow to see if it is split.

Any other ideas?

Seems to be starting a lot better since the battery has a full charge.

Took it for a re-test of the MOT, passed  ;D (since I had already done all the work),  Now just need the V5 to arrive to get Tax
