Brake help/opinions...
« on: 14 April 2009, 20:59 »
Hey all, thinking of changing the brakes on my 8v for some drilled and grooved discs. Only thing is, IMO, the current ones are a bit small. I have 5 spoke alloys on, which show off a lot of the discs, but I think there's quite considerable space between the inside of the alloy and the edge of the disc, like so:

I think it could do with bigger discs, 256mm maybe, from the 16v, or even 280mm from the G60's, but how much will getting the neccessary parts for each be?? And am I right in thinking that 280mm and 256mm can both be fitted to the same hubs and carriers?? Will I need to change the master cylinder from the 8v one also??

Obviously getting drilled and groove 239mm discs would be the cheaper and easier option, but for the people that have done the conversion, would it be worth the effort?? (I am also planning an engine conversion, but not for a couple years, when I'm out of uni). And can anyone point me in the direction of some decent 239mm discs, as I can't find any :(

If you can make sense of that, I commend you....

If I remember correctly there is an excellent guide on this forum on how to do the conversion, I will take a look when I get in from work and see if I can dig it up for you :)

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't fit grooved discs again due to increased noise under heavy braking.
