couple little issues
« on: 14 April 2009, 12:52 »
Hi
to cut a long story short , i have bought back my golf driver from the guy I sold it to, it needed some work and i am almost there
The temp guage in the dash doesnt work and the water light is flashing all the time , is this likely to be one issue or two , and if it is a sensor which one is it . the other major issue before i go to mot is the not working speedo(not needed for mot I believe but necessary for keeping the licence)Have fitted a new speedo cable and i think the little orange thing that was on the end must be still in the gearbox, tips for curing these problems would be handy.
And i thought it was fate that i spotted the car on ebay with 3 hrs to go having not looked for months at golfs.

thx

The two issues with temp and water are i believe sensor issues as long as nothing is noticeably overheating (i realise a dash check will not help this due to temp gauge fubar'd) but usual checks of mayo in oil, oil balls in water expansion tank etc will confirm.

As for the speedo cable, the orange tip will be crunched up by the gears as it is run, but it is worth swapping the gearbox oil (hypoid 80/90) out for fresh stuff once it has been run for a short time.

pop the plug off the coolant sensor, if light stops then can be reasonably sure the gauge fault and light are related. if not light is possibly down to level sensor in tank, pop plug off and bridge the pins. if that stops it then level sensor is bust or coolant is too low.

back to the gauge, if you short the temp sensor pins the gauge should shoot to full and flash the light, or if its a single pin sensor earth it to the block

ok , i have no over heating and no mayo or any the like, now as i am really just a beginner On the hoses that connect to the block
there is a grey sensor and a red sensor and at the bottom underneath a black sensor which is the one for the guage if any. and where can you tell me is the coolant sensor.
thx will be outside putting dash together

no , I just had the expansion tank off and couldnt see any wires, so how would it know the level was low , which if any thing is high is it that black sensor that could be causing both issues
sorry to be a pest

yeah is what im saying, driver has no level sensor so ignore that bit of what i said, concentrate on the wiring to the black sensor on front of head which is for the coolant gauge

good news (sort of) the light has stopped flashing after 30 sec with plug disconnected , so i guess that is the culprit. Tps have a new one for £20 , hope temp guage will work after
Thx very much
