Motorways Kill Golf Mark II's?
« on: 08 April 2009, 13:31 »
Hey all. I need to know if doing constant motorway journeys in my GTi 8v will end up wrecking it. It's done 135,000 miles already, good condition through out but if it'll be killed by sitting for 5+ a week on motorways then I'll sell it. Let me know. Cheers.

It's made in Germany.

They have the odd motorway, some of them are quite fast.

It is very likely that the age of the components on your car will kill it, not motorway driving.  Motorways *will* accelerate bearing wear though.  Engines in good condition *should* be OK with it.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

my daily has 246k on the clock and has no problems with motorways. except the exhaust noise gives me a head ache  :embarassed:

I don't think a semi will give the same results

motorways are better than own driving. On a motorway you sit at 3000rpm which is optimum rpm for oil pressure and lubrication and engine temp is pretty constant. around town you are constantly stop and go, temp gets high while sitting in traffic, and when idleing the oil pressure is low.

Thats what I heard from someone in the know anyway  :lipsrsealed:

Hmm, that's cool. I've been tempted to replace my mark II with a mark IV 1.8 T instead, making sure it's a later model so the ignition problem has been sorted. That, or the V5 model.

surely the V5 is no quicker thant the 1.8T but would drink more fuel and cost more on tax as higher CO2 emissions?

There's not a lot in it, checked out the details on Parker's review website and they're very much the same. Depends on insurance mainly, if it's a lot cheaper to insure a V5 then I'll go that way, but if it's only £100 more or something for the 1.8T then I'll go that way. I would prefer the turbo just for the fun of the ride.

In theory mile for mile motorway driving is doing less damage to your car than any other, less year on many components comppred to country lane/town driving, due to there being less stress on many parts of the car.
MK4 GTI T AGU, REVO Remap, BMC carbon box, Miltek cat back, Forge diverter valve, THS FR3 engine/Gbox mounts, Some random alloys, lowered on coilovers.

Mines got over 150k and I regularly cruise at 90. If well maintained these things eat miles.
