gti 16v middle silencer
« on: 05 April 2009, 18:49 »
i have a 96 gti 16v which makes an awful resonating noise when cold, this is coming from the middle silencer but when warm goes off ive had it checked out as i thought the baffles were gone but there are no rattles from it, sometimes the car feels as if it is holding back should i get a new one or can i bypass the silencer with a straight pipe if so what will happen the silencer is the one which runs along the axle

Mine does that too, its 95M 16v'er, but its only does it whilst its ticking over @ 1000rpm. Anyone know if the 8v & 16v back & middle boxes are interchangeable???

if you like it noisey then yeah. as for the other comment: on the whole the 16v system is a larger diameter than the 8v

as shep said, will make it louder, had a straight thru on my old 8v altho i had a s/s manifold and de-cat as well, was very loud when i put my foot down. the 16v are a larger diameter than the 8v, they have the same size bore as the vr's

Different diameters I believe so no not interchangable.

Just taken one to the scrappy   :undecided:  Does the straight through make it much louder with a stock back box?  when  did it on my 1.4 it made no diffrence, i know its kinda diffrent,  tempted to get one for my valver.
