Early MK3 calipers are the same as the MK2 ones. You need late spec ones. You can tell they are right because the cable mounts on the underside, not the top.

The MK4 calipers are the same as the MK3 ones, just alloy (no rusty). They have a banjo fitting, so need a hose conversion kit. If you're going from drums, you'll need the 4 hose, from disks you'll need the 6 hose IIRC.

For both of them you need the late spec handbrake cables, pre 88 cables won't fit right.

You can mount them the wrong way round (left on right / right on left) and retain the pre 88 cables, but the bleed nipple will be on the bottom - so you'd need to remove the calipers to bleed them.

No thats early/late MK2 spec you ID with the handbrake cable, to ID early/late MK3 check for a handbrake spring. if there is one they're early MK3 ones, which are exactly the same as late MK2.

MK4 ones still corrode and sieze up, so best to paint them. the bleed nipples also sieze in thanks to metal corrosion that occurs when 2 different metals are in contact (forgot what its called again)

Nope not quite that easy, cant fit post-87 handbrake cables to a pre-87 car, they're miles too short.  What you have to do to fit post 87 calipers to a pre-87 car is flip them upside down as you say.

discs from MK2 and MK3 are the same size, just 4/5 stud.  the calipers on the pre87 have smaller pistons though
