overheating 20v turbo

My son has a 1.8 20v turbo which is overhating. I have changed the t/stat but it still gets hot. The fans are cutting in.
I have been told it is probably the head gasket which is going to cost loads at a VW dealer.
Does anyone know of a good VW man near Egham Surrey who I could take it to for assessment and repair.

I'd suspect that the impellor has broken up on the water pump - this is a common problem on the 1.8T engine at around 70-80 K. This means the water is not being circulated around the engine and through the radiator. The water pump is driven off the cambelt so this will have to be dismantled to gain access to it - get your camblet replaced at the same time.

Agreed, most places should suggest replacing the waterpump to you when it goes in for a cambelt change. Since it's exposed anyway they usually don't charge any labour, just the ?20-ish for the part.

Is the 1.8T an external water pump engine? i mean is not on the cambelt?
I would do what the guys suggest, as if the car does overheat then the headgasket is likely to fail.

It was the water pump, changed the cambelt and had a service at the same time so all is well again.
Thanks for the suggestions.
