Question for manual GTi owners
« on: 31 March 2009, 08:55 »
Hi there,

A bit of an odd question this, with my GTi I have noticed recently that if i slightly depress the clutch when i am driving along whilst keeping my foot on the accelerator (for example on motorway) i can feel quite a lot of feedback through the pedal and it feels kind of lumpy.

Now i appreciate its not normal to be accelerating whilst puttting pressure on the clutch but i was hoping that a copule of other people might be able to try this to see if its normal? I am pushing it down, not to the point of disengaging and only for a second or two.

Its quite possible its absolutely normal because i guess the drivetrain would inhenrently carry some vibration but i wanted to guage if the lumpyness is normal.

My car is in for a big service on Monday, do you think the clutch/flywheel is something the mechanics can assess without needing to take the thing apart? My concern is with only a month left of Warrantly if the flywheel is on its way out i'll be boned if it blows,

Let em know your thoughts,

R

I think you should get it checked - not that I have a manual. But if I was in my last month of warranty I personally would want it checked just in case. It cant hurt, and may save you a good few £'s in the long run!

ive got a manual and i have noticed i get a bit of vibration through the clutch whilst accelerating.not really 'lumpy'. as ifti said i would get it into vw if you only got a month left on warrenty. i got a year left so ill ask them to take a look at next service. post back how you get on mate.

Thanks for your repsonses, Do you think its actually something that they can look at without having to take the thing apart? I wonder if they might tell me it cant be inspected without a good few hours work which will obviously cost a bit, its one of those annoying things that you know might be an issue but which I would guess they will just say it's fine! and then 2 months later knowing my luck it will blow.

I get that aswell, I know what you mean and unless you have felt it its incredibly hard to describe. Mine has felt like that since I bought it. Often when Im sitting in heavy traffic that is crawling along I will move the car without pressing the go pedal and just use the tickover and the clutch to slowly crawl and I can feel this "lumpy" feeling aswell, does yours do the same? To be honest I've never thought anything of it.

If a few of you are feeling it, its most probably normal?

That sounds about right, I most recently noticed it on the motorway as i couldnt pin down a slight vibration (I had the wheels all rebalanced and full alignment done so it isnt that) so i put the clutch down just enough that it was fairly noticeable,

its quite re-assuring to hear that you get it too, i guess if i get another golf for my courtesy car that will give me a good feel as to if it is normal, nice to check on a car i'm a bit less worried about

The rubber buffers in your flywheel have worn away, this causes the vibration.

The Caddy's at work have all been doing it for over a year, as long as the clutch doesn't slip you can normally get away with it.
