Small issue - Finance & Key recoding question!
« on: 30 March 2009, 17:36 »
Hi all

Im going to pick up my GTI ED30 on Wednesday.
I have everything ready - the insurance, the bankers draft, etc.

The car has finance on it, which will be cleared in front of me via the PC, and then a fax confirmation from the finance company, all before I take the car. So all seems well on that front.

Ive just rang the seller, and there is a new problem.
The seller owns a prestige cars dealership - Lambo's, Ferrari's, Aston's, etc.
His dealership was broken into last night, and the safe has been stolen - which contained all spare keys.
He has spent today sorting insurance, getting new doors fit etc, and spent over £2000 on new keys for all cars!

Anyway, the GTI Im taking has also had its spare stolen. It therefore has 1 key, and the plastic code thingy.
The seller has re-ordered another, which takes 2-3 days to arrive. He suggests we do the following......

I take the car on Wednesday as planned.
As soon as he receives the key (thurs/Fri this week), he will contact me and come give me the key.
I then take both keys and the car to the VW dealership near me, and get them recoded.
He will pick up the bill for the recoding on his credit card, so I dont pay a penny.

I just wanted to ensure that recoding ensures that the stolen key can not be used on the car, even if the thief manages to find it??

In the meantime I can put the car on my drive, and box it in with my current car, so it cant be moved out. Im in the process of clearing the garage so I can start parking in there, but I dont think the garage will be clear by then! Unless I start putting some stuff in the house temporarily so I can pu tthe car in so its more secure??

Anyways, the main thing Im after is confirmation that the stolen key is useless after Ive recoded?
Do I need to book the car in for a recoding, or can it be done on the spot?
How long does it take?

the stolen key wont star the car when then new ones are recoded but they will open the doors and also fit the ignition sounds doggy i would want a whole new lock set. it dont matter to him its going through insurance.

How reputable is this place?  How long has it been trading?  Have you been to the place - does it look broken into?

Any chance your details were in the safe as a buyer?  The thieves might come round to your address one night and not be too amused their keys don't work....  Its a long shot I admit but it all sounds a bit dodgy  :undecided:

He doesnt have any of my details as of yet, so all is Ok on that front - doesnt have my full name, address, or anything.
I may look into the lock set though - would I need to leave the car in for them to do - or is it a few hours jobby?

all they do is code the spare key and remote. you have the car then they order a new lockset call you in and fit a new lock set should only take half the day then even if they find the car they cant get into it or move it.

I'll put some pics up when I have the car in my possession ;)
I may clear the garage out tomorrow and put some stuff in the house to make room for the car while the keys etc are sorted. Not too keen on leaving it outside just in case. My new garden shed arrives tomorrow, so I'll put that up on the weekend, to give the GTI its new home ;)

Well done ifti,

You've had some issues to consider getting an Ed 30 sorted

If true, it seems that the vendor is doing all he can to put right the issues in this latest situation. As stated, the original keys will open the drivers door and operate the streering lock but, if recoded, it will not be able to start the car and drive it away. I would be asking the seller if the stolen key has anything on it to identify the Ed 30 - VRM, chassis no, stock no etc. Either way, it would be prudent to get the locks changed for peace of mind as you never know when that stolen key may turn up again :undecided: If he pays up for this, good result.

Hope you get it all resolved soon and you're in your GTI this week
