iPod and radio antenna

So what's this about?  :angry:


I recently bought an interior windscreen antenna, and it works fine. However I noticed interference from the moment I put it in, and it was sometimes hard to get a signal, I thought the live feed from his had come loose but checked it and it was fine.


I did however have my iPod unplugged from the headunit, and when plugged it in the interference came back, so the iPod being plugged in is the problem. What's the matter?


I've tried turning the iPod completely off, it doesn't help, I've changed sources, doesn't help. :(

Is the iPod plugged in on a car charger to the cigarette lighter?
If so, it could be an "earth loop" problem.
If that's the case, try disconnecting the car charger from the iPod.

Surely though, if you're listening to the radio, you don't need the iPod plugged in anyway.

No it's plugged into the headunit, and when it's plugged in, it's in the glovebox, which is usually locked so it's a pain in the ass to unplug it each time :(

could it be the grounding? if it's the same principle as things like guitars (something i know more about than cars  :rolleyes:) then if the product (i-Pod) isn't correctly grounded it will cause this interference

I'm sure it's grounded properly chap as the cable that runs from the headunit to the iPod directly...

hmmm does the sound change when you touch the ipod? as in can you hear the interference change? i reckon something somewhere is touching

No defo not. Only when I unplug it does the interference stop. There's nothing in the glovebox that's doing it. The only thing I can think of is the iPod is still on when plugged in, and it's right next to the connection behind the glovebox where the radio antenna is. But when I unplug the iPod, and leave it on, it stops interfering, so I kind of discarded that idea...

shady does this mean you leave the ipod connected all the time??? if so isn't that gonna knacker the battery on the iPod?  surely when ignition is turned on and off you will get a little overloading?

No as the iPod turns off whenever I change source or turn off the car. :) Besides I actually bought the iPod specifically for the car :P
