all leads do is provide a spark. there's no performance gain to be had from spending ?60 on carbon tipped do da's ;D Just get some coloured ones if you like that sort of thing and they need replacing.

All they do is provide a spark!
quite important then  ;)
good quality leads are essential, buy them from VW for piece of mind.

Got them the wrong way round :0 carbon tipped were the cheapest.

I want to spend as little as possible :) I know there is no performance gains to be had with leads and also plugs, just wanted to check :)

i am sure i have seen them down Halfords (NGK) ones for ?20, I'll have a closer inspection of them later.

Thanks

When I take the ht leads out of my car I notice there is some oil deposits around the spark plugs, as it's quite a way down there :) what the best way to get rid of the crap before i take he plugs out and if any of this crap falls into the plug hole will this do any damage?

Thanks

get a set of Beru leads from these guys.

http://www.vwspares.co.uk/g2electrical.html

Beru are one of the best quality leads out there

oil around the base of plugs (the actual sparkin bit) is caused by two things

1. Worn piston rings
2. rocker cover gasket needing changed

2. is a pretty simple job to replace, 1. isnt!!

Cheers mate, thanks for the link.

The oil or gunge I can see around the spark plug as you look down the hole, I have not removed them yet! Just want to know if any of the gunge falls down the hole when I remove the plug will cause any damage.

If it does have oil around the base of plugs

and it is one of the two thing you mentioned:

1. Worn piston rings
2. rocker cover gasket needing changed

Could this be the cause of my smoking? as I have done an oil and filter cahnge and she is still smoking when hot :(

Also are therw any how to's on replacing the Worn piston rings or rocker cover gasket  ?

Have you done a compression test?
If any cylinders are low then add a teaspoon of oil, if pressure improves then the rings are worn, if not then the cylinder head is worn.
Rocker cover gasket can be replaced by removing the inlet manifold and then the cam cover.
