Why don't you do it yourself?
Compression tester costs about 15 quid from Halfords.
All you have to do is disable the ignition (unplug the lead that goes from the coil to the centre of the dizzy, remove it completely) and the fuel pump (remove the fuel pump fuse), then take the spark plugs out one at a time, for each plug screw in the compression tester, crank the car on the starter with the throttle wide open, take the reading.
I think 46 quid labour is steep, should only be about half an hours labour really.

Thanks for the info :)

I'll get down halfords the weekend.

Noticed today that my ht leads are knackered as it was missing really bad, i popped the bonnet and could see a big spark coming from the 2nd lead to the cover, moved it slight to stop the arcing and it seemed fine, getting the new leads coming tomorrow, thank god :)

Took out the leads and plugs tonight, the plugs were all the same with a grey colour to the prongs and black around the rim above the prongs, is this normal?

Also one of the leads was really damaged look:

Light grey deposits on a spark plug are normal, black isn't, i think that usually means overfuelling or could be burning oil.

Well it has been burning oil and was being over fueld until I got the timing and idle sorted. I'll change the plugs and leads today and run it for a week and then have a look at them and see.

There was no black on the three prongs at all, the blackness was on the rim like i said.  I tried to take a pic but I could not get a good focus on it, i'll try again later

Cheers

Got the new leads and plugs in today, got set of Beru leads and plugs as gambit suggested, half the price of the dealer :)

What a difference it has made, no flat spot anymore and really smooth acceleration. still burning oil, but only when the engine is hot and has been left idling for a minute or two, I leave it for a week or two to see if the burning goes away, then i'll do a compresion test and see what's what.

Only problem now is that when i take my foot off the accelerator coming down a hill and keep the car in gear (any gear) the car juders back and forth instead of holding steady in the gear.]

and where the injector metal tubes go into the engine (sorry don't know what they are called) there is alot of movement, I can wiggle them on at leats two, could this cause any of my problems?

Any suggestions?

should be able to wiggle injectors so dont worry about it unless you can pull them clean out
