GTi DSG Flywheel problem
« on: 19 March 2009, 18:48 »
Recently had the GTi for its 4 year MOT at a main dealer (it was offered free, which rang alarm bells slightly), and got the cambelt done at the same time. Got stung for some additional bearings.

However, it came back with an advisory saying 'noisy flywheel', and I was quoted £180 to 'investigate' with the further promise of £1000 for a new flywheel, and £300 for a new clutch. Having my suspicions (the last time I had it in to the dealer for its service the oil light came on as soon as I got off the forecourt and I found they'd not topped it up fully) I went to another main dealer, where the guys looked bemused and told me the GTi DSG doesn't have a flywheel as such, and after a test drive they diagnosed a problem with the fuel pump.

Now I've done some searching on the net, and there are mentions of flywheel problems, but only with the TDi. Can anyone shed any light on this? I'm going for a third opinion at another main dealer  this weekend

I don't know.  But if the other dealers were confused by this it throws a bit of doubt over their story.

yeah, thats what i thought, but i don't wanna pay the £200 for the new fuel pump, and then have the flywheel blow in 2 weeks time!

any discussion would be appreciated

I'm no mech expert but I am 99% sure that the DSG does have a flywheel

just an update on this, my beloved GTi is going under the stethoscope on Tuesday, and I've got 2 dealers still telling me different things (although the one that immediately diagnosed a problem with the dual mass has backtracked slightly, justified it by saying 'well, the pump and the flywheel are very close'

One says they've never heard of a problem with the fuel pump
One says they've never heard of a problem with the duel mass, and if it was a problem, it would go big time rather than just being noisy.

I'd be interested to heard if anyone has had a problem with either, my car is an 05 GTi with DSG, and 42k on the clock.

I've not heard of any real problems with either the DMF or the fuel pump. If it is the fuel pump it is worth noting that it is driven off the camshaft and the lobes have been known to wear prematurely, which can in turn cause damage to the camshaft. I'd be tempted to go with the one's quoting the fuel pump issue and get them to check the cam lobe as it is a relatively cheap fix compared to the DMF.
