no idea  how much has been done to the head or what cam you have,  but 36mm chokesshould be about right.    it'll run but no idea what the optomum jetting will be,  rolling road or try ringing souther carbs and they may be abel to send you some that are close.

doce's on a counterflow 8v  can be a pita tho
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

when i was doing my XR3 zetec i was looking at twin webbers till some crazy white haired old man called dave bogg shuved a set of bike carb's under my nose

once bike carbs are jetted that's it , no need to set them up every other week like twin webbers and they give more power

but your fuel ecconomy is poop as all you do is floor it every where    listening to the carbs snort !!!

if you really want carbs, then get a crossflow head and make it worthwhile. All you do is suck the hot sh!t air from the bulkhead and you are only mm away from that so the air availability is rubbish. Thats why they are a bugger to live with in the first place. DCOEs are well proven carbs in a variety of marques, but the standard 8v set-up is just not suited to them

some installs ahve a very nasty habbit of boiling fuel in the float chamber.    that causes sh!te running and MASSIVE fuel consumption.

on 16v's and presumably crossflow 8v's wher they out frount in the nice cool air with space to breath and fit decent filter with ram pipes they can work really really well,    if really want a carbed counterflow 8v  downdraft cars are optimal
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

try and find twin downdraft carbs for an 8v though! Rare rare and really rare to find, so you are best with a crossflow head, and like damnny says, its just too hot for dcoes that are sat directly above the exhaust manifold. The only kinda way around it is the dreaded bonnet scoop to force enough air down over the carbs and this will also reduce the exhaust heat effect- but it will look very scooby. You will also need to ceramic coat the manifold and lag the downpipe. 8v's are not suited to sidedrafts and thats why there is so much slagging off of this set up. They just do not produce the power that they should do.
