Need some suspension/ride height help ASAP...
« on: 16 March 2009, 14:19 »
Ok so I've seen the thread in Mk2 Maintenance about measuring ride height. It says "to measure you're cars drop, measure the distance from the centre of your wheels to the bottom of the metal arch". Thing is...I don't understand what he meant by the bottom of the metal arch?? At the mo, my car's so low I can only get my fingers in there up to my first joint in my middle finger (closest to knuckle) and I can't feel anything on the rear, but on the front I can feel something that's seperate to the outside of the plastic arch, but still feels like plastic, I can't find any metal  :undecided: :undecided: I suck at this

You can probably feel the inner arch liner, the plastic arch won't sit that much lower than the metal one - mine is about 1cm off.

Doesn't help much, but you'll just need to feel your way round.

Yea that's what I thought I could feel on the front, the arch liner, mine was measuring -60mm to the lowest part of that as in...if you're looking down the side of the car, the outermost part (where it flares)

 the plastic arch trims are approx 3 mm thick. the only way u can measure to metal is by removing them all.

can i DARE to ask why you want to know this, do you have issues or just want to know how low it is .

There is an easier way.

1. Look at car.

2. Decide if it is low enough

3. Leave it, or lower it some more.

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

I have issues with rubbing and want to know how low it is. I was looking at 60mm drop springs, was told by previous owner it was 80mm at the mo, but when I measured it it measured around 60mm, so looking to get 40mm now

Organisys...how do I know how much to lower it by (or raise, as the case is) if I don't know what it already is??

i got told with my drop, alloys offset, tyre size etc etc I wouldnt rub,  :lipsrsealed: also got told that a mates was 80mm drop, yet i know mine is 60 but was lower than his

I rubbed, both front and rear,

solved the rear by swithcing rear shocks,

front is BETTER , by a combination of NEw top mounts and the tyre wearing away

are you on coilovers ?

sorry to butt in but does anybody know the standard wheel centre to arch measurement (ie non gti) ive never owned one on standard suspension and im in a similar dilemma (plus it would be a usefull number to have on a thread like this.... ;)  )
