ICE Install
« on: 15 July 2004, 18:44 »
Ok here it is, Just bought a new sony mcdx800 off ebay, a boot dvd player and a 6" screen for my mk2 gti. headunit is no problem installing, also wiring up the amps and subs I have is no problem as i've done it loads before.

The problem is I have never installed a monitor or dvd and wanted to know if anyone knows if this is hard to do. Firstly the dvd (I hope) is just like sticking a cd changer in the boot. But I have no idea about the screen. These are my questions...

1. IS the screen easy enough to connect to the rest of the system?

2. Will the sound be able to run through my headunit. (Eg do most of the dvd players or screens have phono outputs which i can connect to the aux input of the headunit???

3. And finally, under the ashtray there is a large hole where i put cds etc in my mk2. Am i able to replace this with a fibre glass cut out where i can fit the screen. (I dont know if you will understand this question as it hard to describe what i mean.)

4. If you understand q3, how much do you think it would cost to get it made and sprayed black.

thanks in advance for any help

do you mean a Sony CDX-M8800 as I can't find a mcdx800 on the cel-direct webby. if so you have AUX inputs that you can run your DVD player into and get the sound though the headunits' speakers.

1. yes

2. answered above

3. do you mean the center console's hole? I thought about mounting a screen there and went against it due to the fact when you're in 1st, 3rd or 5th the 'knob (he he) is blocking the screen. What about removing the cubby hole and ashtray and mounting it there. With a 6" screen it should give you about 1/2" down the side of it to mount some switches so you can power up your DVD player from the dash. As for actually mounting it you could fibreglass it in there, but obviously you'd never get it out again. I mounted mine using the dash mount bracket screwed to the top of the larger hole in the center console. it was solid enough to hold the screen still.

As for wiring I'd advise running all the associated AV wires under the center console and past the handbrake. Saves routing them over the pedals and steering column and keeps them separate from the amps and power that run down the sides already assuming you're running a sub/amp in the boot.

4. you can buy a fibreglass kit for about ?10 and it's fairly easy (and messy) to do. Paint is cheap too. Make sure you sand it down real flat though else it'll look sh!te.

Hope that helps :)

thanks dizzie, its only a 5.6 inch screen- i like the idea of dvd control switches down the side but i don't know if thats possible until i have seen the dvd player (its been delivered soon). i'll try the fibre glass and if i can't do it, i am sure a local car bodyshop will be able to make me one cheap enough
