On saturday my steering wheel started making a grinding noise when turning.

I think it just needs something greesing, but any idea what? Do I need to remove the steering wheel?

My mk2 did it too, but I just left it because i couldnt be bothered to sort it but this car is sooo much better, its a bit embarasing to be honest!

Cheers :)

It's all the metal filings on the back of the steering wheel..

Take your steering wheel off, brush away all the metal filings, stick the steering wheel back on - sorted.

Common problem I think, as my old Mk3 kept doing the same thing so I read up on it on another site, did the above and it went away.

It could be the top bearing breaking up.

Hmm, is that serious?

It looks grimey behind the wheel where the horn contact is. I'll give it a lube up and see what happens, try the easy things first :)

Its the horn contact on the back of the steering wheel slip-ring the grease dries up and grates... Wipe the filings if theres any and put a bit of contact grease on them.. Thats whatmine did and its been fine since...

Doubt it will be the top bearing, if it was that grinding you'd feel alot of play if the bearings were that shot !!

i had this. i never took the wheel off, i used a cotton bud to clean it, then another cotton bud to apply the grease. went for a drive with lots of steering, and applied a few more times. job done, no more noise.

Cheers mike! Sounds like a plan :)

I can see quite a bit of dirt behind there so guessing its that :undecided:

No play in the wheel either :)

Cheers guys!
