rear bias braking problem?

my golf seems to be locking up at the rears when braking. even when first getting into car and reversing out drive if I brake I hear the rears coming on. any ideas? My pedal doesn't seem as good as my neighbours identical car but it passed MOT just a few weeks ago.

there is some sort of valve on the rear beam, mine was seized, wheni got the lines changed the garage freed it off, made a BIG difference to mine

search time  :wink:

when I got my brake bled they said they freed that valve thing off but maybe its still jammed, might take it back for a check. Still wondered why pedal ain't as good as my neighbours though?

The load compensating valve is probably worn out. It moves about every time you go over a bump, so after 20 odd years it'll be a bit tired.

It can also be a cause for seized rear calipers. If it is not giving enough pressure to the rear, the calipers will seize up from not being used.

I think they are around £60 to replace.

Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Cool, the rear calipers are brand new and giving the opposite effect of too much rear braking and nowt from front. Is this £60 from VW or another?

Someone (I think rubjonny) has done a guide on here about adjusting the rear bias valve.... I adjusted mine as the guide said (as mine has mk2 rear brakes!!) and it was just a matter of modifying the spring (I cant find it now but it's defo a mk2 section bit)

Also, if you have recently lowered the car without adjusting this compensator then by default it will give you heavier braking at the rear
