service - is this expensive ?

Left my MY05 GTI in for a service. Miles are 46k. They did the following :

oil & filter (long life)
air filter
fuel filter
pollen filter
spark plugs

Came to £240 ...which is more or less what my local dealer quoted....is this expensive for an independant ?. I;m thinking I should have just left it with the dealer and got the nice VW stamp ...ahhhh

no about right for that price as mines just been done + yes i would have left your dealer do it as it would have been a FVWSH!

I don't think that is too bad considering they will have used about 5 litres of oil (£11+ a litre=£55)

The other filters and plugs will have come to around another £50 (if they used genuine VW parts)

So £140 for labour is basically about 2 hrs labour inc VAT nowardays.

had a service last month to the same amount + change! and just yesterday put new front shoes on me car (Eagle F1's) @ £260, had a look at the backs and both need changing too    and im selling the car in a month or so, nightmare!

This sounds pretty good to me, I have been shopping around and the best i have found for the same

Though with the addition of a Brake Fluid change (Need to confirm i need this once i can check in the service book - Makes £50 difference) is £330 at a VW Main Dealer (Drift Bridge in Surrey).

As the car is 4 years old I am also going to have the timing belt changed, this is currently quoted at £470 which seems steep, but i would probably like to have that covered by the 1 year warranty it will have on the work.

£800 will be a bit of a stinger but i figure i should be good for a while and the next service should be a lot cheaper. I have used Drift Bridge a few times and they genuinely seem to do a pretty good job, though i always ask that they dont wash it as i spied a car wash out the back.

So in answer to your question £240 isnt too bad, but for £280 for the same job at a VW dealership with a stamp i would have gone for that, i'm sure it would be worth more than £40 at re-sale to have all VW Stamps in there.

But that is a 'retail' price for the oil.  The proper Castrol LL3 trade oil can be had for about £3.20 per litre - so think of the 'markup' they make on oils!

The brake fluid change is every 2 years, irrespective of the mileage.  So just work from when the car was registered.

Thanks, i was thinking it would probably hve been changed if the pads were done at some point, but probably best ot be safe in any case,
