Surely the stock airbox isn't that restrictive?

The GL at the moment, feels slow and sluggish. I know it's heavy and auto, but feels like there is no torque at all. The van seems to pull away quicker. Anyway, I was working on it, and had the airbox off it, and I moved it, and it seems SO much faster, resposive and torquier without the airbox connected. I tried it out with some tights over the throttle body cover, and it revs faster, and as soon as I put it back on, it's slow again. Air filter changed within a thousand miles ago, all clean, I gave the filter box a clean, no help. Cleaned the throttle body, but it STILL seems slower with the stock airbox.

Would it be worth upgrading to a 2l 16v or VR6 airbox?

Also, on the same car, you put it in drive, go along, and sometimes you rev it and nothing happens, it's as if it's in neutral, then all of a sudden all the power goes through and it wheel spins. Does the fluid need topping up, and where do I fill it? Thanks.  :smiley:

the std airbox is fairly restrictive (and the 1.8 has the same box as the gti's)... you need to get the air flowing faster through it and thats means removing the trumpet in the box and smoothing any of the many sharp edges, If you dont mind a little more noise you can also drill the inside wing side of the box so more air will get in! (I would use a sports filter with this mod tho)

regarding the box....try new gear box oil but I'm not sure if its a belt driven box like a cvt?

OK, so I'll dremel it. I might drill it, only problem is I'd prefer to have a spare.

No idea if it's belt driven or not. How could on tell?

On this one you can see the tourque converter spinning uner the hood.

I removed the trumpet out the top of the airbox on my VR6.
Also drilled some holes on the side facing the wing.

Throttle response seemed alot better, although you could only hear the induction noise with the bonnet open.

Yeah, not in it for all the noise, it has a deep sounding exhaust on it anyway, some 2.0 thing. Have the reciept. How did you remove it? :smiley:

on mine the trumpet inside the box just unclipped.. but mines the slightly weird early bosch maf i also cut a section out from the side closest the wing and used piper x panel..

Yeah might get a panel filter. Ill try see if this trumpet removes.

on my old mk2 i got a pair of tights (mine obviously :tongue:) and the mesh from an instant bbq and i made a nice little filter, and i removed the front half of the airbox. (mk2 1.6 carb) it sounded like the devil but it did loose performance due to heatsoak.
