Here's a good DIY of the sat nav install. He has the GPS antenna come out above the vent on top of the centre console.

You don't necessarily have to mount the antenna on top of the dash, i lodged mine inside the dash in a small void just to the top left of the unit, and have had no reception issues at all. But that may be down to the quality of the GPS antenna itself.

I did likewise and it works perfectly. No problems at all getting a signal. It looks a lot cleaner with the antenna hidden just below the dash trim.

Thanks for all your knowledge people:smiley: I have a RCD300 stereo at the moment, but am not sure when I take it out if the correct wires will be in place to fit a MFD2 DVD sat nav unit? I went to the vw dealer in Birmingham today and a chap in service said I would need all new wires for a nav unit. :undecided:  :embarassed: Does any one know? Thanks

I took the same stereo out and installed the rns-510.  Its plug and play, on the rns you had to swap and earth cable round but that was it.  Oh and plug the gps in

That unit looks the business but a bit pricey for me, would you recommend any place to buy a unit from?

ebay is your best bet, can get some great deals at the moment.  Other than that check the classified sections of the gti forums

Im surprised the dealers actually keep there jobs if they give information like that out,  the service guys know bugger all about there products...The Mfd2 DVD is a straight retrofit with no additional wiring needed.  The only thing you will need is the GPS antenna and the code for the nav unit,  the quad lock connector is already setup for the nav unit so is plug and play,  but your car will need a little bit of VCDS coding so if you know someone local to you to do it then a beer might be in order for that person.  Im saying that it needs coding but it will work without coding it but it will show incorrect coding if fault finding at the dealer.
