how hard is it to replace the whole loom? sorry if these questions seem silly 

will a simple cut and crimp connector be sufficient or a cut and solder?

not sure about the coil pack loom - i would have thought its simply plug and play so if you can undo a plug you should be fine lol

think the loom is approx £40

after the repairs don't forget to clear the codes to make sure your hard work was worth the effort

Was thinking before doing any 'repairing' to the wiring to the coils why not test it with a multi meter first  However i have no idea on which of the 4 wires ont he plug to test and what the reading im looking for should be (hopefully that makes sense)? this would surely eliminate the fact that the loom is working correctly wouldnt it?

Sorry to hijack but does any body do better coil packs, likes of splitfire etc, im at my wits end just had my second go in 3 months of ownership, always use VAG ones to replace them.  Just wondering as i do a lot of driving on the mainland and I am as such a long way from home and the toolbox  To be honest i find the AA / RAC very little help aswell.

What are the symptoms of your car 16VWarby? is teh car misfiring quite badly or is it still performing quite well...as it may be your wiring that has chaffed from heat exposure....

Runs like a sack of... makes me wee boobies jiggle a bit its that bad, definately coil pack.

Uses fuel more than a vr should sounds worse than a tractor (they sound rather good at times)

But then she does get given death regularly it would be rude not to when you have open roads and few speed limits, its the price you pay for having fun.

Sadly this is quite a major loom and its also very expensive from VW, your looking at £400. Go to www.breakeryard.com and put in what part you want, they will email you back with part and price. It cost me £50 all in for mine and turned up next day. Quality

Right, Ive been sorting out the wiring and have stripped the wiring and cleaned it up and taped it up again, (quite a good job actually  )

I no longer have any of the faults that were showing up when I scanned it yesterday - result! BUT i still have the slight misfire....now when the coil packs are playing up do they usually bring up a fault on vag-com?

my performance is still there but there is defo some kind of missing under acceleration - could the timing be out at all?
