Browsing the classifieds for another 'box?

You could go to a G3 8V box - it's a bit stronger, with the larger input shaft.

The problem with your current 'box is that it's probably got quite a bit of swarf in  there now - everything will need to be very well cleaned prior to re-assembly.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Bloody Hell, a 16v must be horrible an a motorway,

both my 8vs have been 72 mph at 4k rpm, if the 16v is any shorter than that its taking the piss!

Swapping the diff itself isnt an easy job, and even if it was chances are its done some very bad things to the gearbox casing and the rest of the internals
the MK3 8v box is not any stronger, yes it has a bigger input shaft but thats the last thing that would fail on an 020 box. 16v box also has the bigger input shaft and is closer to the MK2 8v box in terms of ratios, but shorter 5th as said. not a massive ammount in it though.
mk3 ratios are a bit more relaxed though, its up to you really.
