The 1.4

Fixed. :afro:

I've got a lawnmower at home with a bigger engine than that!

I think my 12HP lawnmower gets off the line quicker too. Seems to tow more then my car, the clutch just slips.

If you want performance buy it straight out the box (dealers). Its no fun when your mates cars are faster than yours, some of my mates cars include a clk 430, r33 skyline gtr, 2 x focus st's, xsara vts and a mate thats ordered a nissan gtr. all of which are miles faster than mine.

None of them cost £1500 and have been totally trouble free for 12 months. I wanted a 16 valver but mine (8v) came up and it seemed right, it feels peppy as long as you dont look at the speedo and is excellent on fuel. I get loads of people who try and race me but there is no point, i know how fast it goes, if they want to know they can buy it off me. At the end of the day if it dont go, then just show.

If you want speed get a turbo or CC's. not a mk3 golf!!

8 Valve = Maximum power    116.6 PS (115.0 bhp) (85.8 kW)
@ 5400 rpm
Specific output    58 bhp/litre
0.95 bhp/cu in
Maximum torque    119.0 Nm (88 ft·lb) (12.1 kgm)
@ 4500 rpm
Top speed    200 km/h (124 mph)

16valve = Maximum power
(DIN)    150 PS (110 kW/148 hp)
215 km/h (134 mph)
So there is no argument here, the 16 valve car wins...

Imo which is completely impartial, leave the car as it is and enjoy it for what it is, if you want something quicker, go buy something quicker

We all know the 16v is faster......but

ADY   Power 113BHP @5400rpm  Torque 166nm 122lb/ft @ 3200rpm
ABF    Power 148BHP @6000rpm  Torque 180nm 133lb/ft @ 4800rpm

I still say for the way the 8v delivers it torque lower down suits my driving style better

Dunno about anyone else, but I like reading these threads, nothing like a good bit of banter to keep things interesting. Could be worse, we could all drive mk4s (Yawn......)

This is an interesting topic...

I have recently acquired a MK3 cabrio and when I first drove it I thought it was a bit slow, then found out it was the GTi engine. I did think about trying to improve the power - then I thought about it a bit more and decided that actually, Im happy with it as it is. I love the look of the Cabrio, and all I am doing to it is changing the seats (the current ones are a bit mouldy) and I will probably end up lowering it as well - it just looks much better.

I have seen a Cooper S at rapid pace. I think it would outdo almost any standard spec Golf.

Part of the reason I decided not to make the Golf faster was my love of classic Minis. Ive recently purchased a 2.0 16V Vauxhall redtop engine, and a nice Clubman for it to go in. That should be plenty quick enough. When its done, I'll be taking it to the Burburgring. Should be awesome fun.

But like someone said, it doesn't matter what you own. Someone will always own a faster one.

ah nothing like a good 'ol debate based almost entirely on pure conjecture, myth and pointless speculation. its amusing how eightyeightmph's pictures of the two different engines show a shining example of the 16v, but a crusty old knackered 8v engine... if the 16vers are so confident then why the need to steer the debate by using these not so subtle underhand tactics?? :nerd:

I was very surprised i stayed with that cooper S. I was expecting it to fly away, but the look on the dudes face, the way he was driving, and the speed we where doing all added up that the guy must of been giving it all...To be honest, i wasnt expecting my 8v to keep up, not even close, but it did...im not saying 8v are super fast, im just saying what happened to me.
