Can the brake servo be fitted the wrong way round?

I'm a bit confused.

I can't get my brake pedal to go hard while pumping it with the engine off. All that i have done to the braking system is to remove the master cylinder from the servo, and the servo from the car. I haven't touched the lines at all.

However, i have noticed now that its all back in that my brake pedal is about half an inch from the brake switch light (yet lines up with the clutch pedal) and that when i pump the pedal it won't go hard.

Is it possible to fit the brake servo 180 degrees out, and if so what effect would it have? Something isn't right and i'm not sure what!

If the pedal won't go hard, then you have air in the system. As for the brake light switch, the plunger is on an adjustable ratchet. Pull the plunger back out towards the brake pedal.

If it was 180 out, I dont think the vacuum feed would reach..  Does the pedal feel fine/work with the engine running?  Im guessing you checked the seals on the mc? Ben

that's what i was trying to work out, but that is the only difference betwen the "right way" and 180 degrees out, right?

Well that's what i first thought, but like i say it hasn't been tampered with so i was wondering if the servo fitted incorrectly would effect it. I guess the hoses have just perished while the car has been laid up for a while. Oh well, braided hoses it is!

i fitted my girlfriend a new servo and it was bigger (hers is a 1.3) this one was from a GTi and the pin for the servo was in the lower hole making the pedle lower so the light switch didnt work

i extended the little metal bracket with a bolt

Sorted 

there is air in the brake system that is why the pedel wont pump up as darnPB wrote

get the engine running first.

I messed about with this fork to get the brake light switch to line up

the fork is only used to get the brake pedal at the correct height, line it up to the clutch pedal. (make sure clutch pedal stop is fitted)
to adjust the brake light switch you press the pedal, then yank the pedal switch pin out to full extention, release & press the pedal and the switch self-adjusts.
