Err hi, I'm Rob, here's a sh1tty car
« on: 19 February 2009, 20:52 »
Well I signed up on here a while ago and never really posted.

I bought this rather sorry Mk3 as a present to straighten up for my sister:

Now the car looks like a basket case and it's well over a year since it saw an MOT man but I think it's got the roots of something interesting, tis a Gonto after all!

My sisters over the moon because all our family cars were VW's but neither of us have owned one yet and an 8V Mk3 ticks a lot of the right boxes for her.

When I get going I'll start a project thread.

Cheers,

Rob

So I'm here for inspiration and advice and probably at times a bit of consolation as well.

Nah I don't reckon. The Gonto reference is a little homage to the Mikster as I'm quite enjoying reading his thread. His car appears to be pretty much on the road, this one needs sills, wheel alignment and the brakes rebuilding before it even attempts to get MOT'd.

There's also a motherload of grass stuffed into every oriface on the underside, the FR LH wheel has a giant flat (with lots of hammer marks around it!) and the FR RH is a different pattern so I'm guessing this car has enjoyed the straight on option at one of Milton Keynes many roundabouts.

Add to that all the plastics have departed, rust round the arches and the sill / floor being collapsed in the middle because it's been jacked in the wrong place and I think you undestand why I have my work cut out, I like a challenge.

Thanks for the welcome anyway.

Cheers,

Yeah, if I was buying for me it would have been a Mark 1 as this was the first car I worked on when I started 'helping' at a local garage on Saturday mornings aged 13. The 1.8 Mk1 was one of the owners projects and he was so patient when I ritually f**ked it up every week.

But my sisters better off with a Mk3, she feels all cosy and reassured bacause it weighs twice as much as a Mk2 and we used to have a Vento.

Can't get a Mk4 for £100 and I'm a cheapskate

Do like Mk4's but then I like all Golf's really. Short of a Mk2 (we had a D plate TD Passat instead) we had all versions of Golf when I was growing up. My mums a heavy smoker and her 1.4 Mk4 was minging when we came to sell it and I had it looking almost new after a hard days cleaning.

Few cars are that durable really.

i have never been in anything other than a mk4, only passed a few months ago, hopped straight into mk4 2.0, then few months later into a mk4 1.8T not a bad car few problems as with all cars, i dont really look after it like i should, but thats just me.
