Non start question...
« on: 18 February 2009, 20:19 »
Hi folks!

Just completed a clutch change on my mk2 GTI. Now thats done we're back on track for a reliable daily driver. New driveshaft bolts are all im waiting for (VW parts say it wont be here till FRIDAY! Meh) So while waiting i thought i'd double check all was working and the clutch is done right so i tried starting it. No go sadly. First few attempts identified that i'd cracked the tip of the king lead in the coil, so i changed it out and tried again. No go, and the engine was now locking on the second or third turn. By this time i was now noticing that the fuel was constantly priming, and not hitting cut out. Also, theres a fair reek of fuel but no visible evidence which shows a leak. My guess is that the non start due to the king lead has caused a fuel flood, but i cant work out why the fuel is not cutting out after a few seconds. Added to that theres a strange clicking noise from the inlet manifold around the fuel rail AFTER i have attempted to start it. The biggest puzzle is why it has started doing this when i havent been about that part of the engine during the clutch change?? Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Im now stumped!

Ah tits, that sounds like exactly whats happened. The earth to the box was thoroughly bolted in right, but i now have a memory of shorting the battery out on the gearbox (using a crowbar during the clutch change and it popped out and touched the positive). It sparked a peach too, reckon that may have toasted the ecu?

Excellent, i think thats exactly whats happened. Bah. I'll try the earth strap tomorrow as i might get away with it and i have nothing to lose! Seen an ECU on fleabay for a tenner so cant hurt to get that bought either! I picked up a new filter yesterday to do an oil change once the clutch was done, so im glad i didnt do it just yet! Will drain it out if it doesnt start tomorrow too. Cheers for the speedy reply too!! Will let you know how i get on.

Just checked my ECU today. I have a Digifant II ending in "DB". Is this reasonably common or similar to the other ones found around?

DB sounds very familiar. That is what was in both my 8v's. Don't buy one from a Corrado G60 though. They are different and have a small tube that senses manifold pressure. I don't think that will work on a digi 8v.
