Alternator missing bolt?

Had my car serviced yesterday, the mechanic said the alternator was really loose but said he had sorted it.

After having a look myself im trying to work out if when he tightened it, if he forgot to put a bolt back on? I have no idea if the bit highlighted should actually of ever have one or not.

Hi,

The threaded part you see is the end of a long allen bolt that goes in through a hole in the timing cover. A 5mm allen key (I think?) tightens it. It wont have a nut on it as it goes into a thread on the bracket that holds the alternator. The head on my one was rounded so hopefully yours is okay.

Ok thanks. There was a nut just sat,resting on top of the battery. He said he had no idea and that it was nothing to do with him. Anyone familiar with where it might go (or where it might have come from?!)

That could be many, many things!  Have a look and jiggle a few things around, tis the only way!

There was a similar problem on a mk2 I broke mate.

Check the bolt hasnt snapped  partway thus not leaving it long enough to thread in, but making it appear it has trhread and is correct.

The part it goes into after the alternator is threaded.

The bolt had snapped on the 8v I was breaking

Is that blue surround on your grille, what I think it is or is it a wannabe? I can't make out the engine, hence my question.

Dear Max,
The long bolt is for the alternator,take off your timing casing(the top casing) and about half way down you should see a hole where it should fit in. If you have lost,threaded or sheared the bolt i have a spare one for you, if youneed it.

The small nut looks about a 10mm, if you look at the water pump housing, near the water pump there might been a small threaded bolt sticking out, check to see if the 10mm nut fits on there.

Hi,

It was a turquoise/blue grille stripe, bumper trim & pin stripe. I say was It's now red again!  And yeah its a 89 GTI Digifant.

I thought it may have been the special edition, ie G60 16V. Rare as you like if it was.

pretty sure thats 6mm allen key that goes through the timing casing and through the alternator after all my weekend of faffing   

that'l save you all of 10 seconds
