Question:
Aren't Platinum or Iridium spark plugs the best?

Answer:
No. As a matter of fact, Platinum and Iridium are some of the worst metal conductors. The reason why Platinum and Iridium spark plugs are used is for longevity only. They can last up to 100,000 miles. If you are looking for longevity, they are for you. If you are looking for performance, choose silver.
actually i agree there iirc i read up somewhere about different metals/materials used in making plugs (quite interesting actually)

The big question is, though, did he gain 7 bhp from these plugs, or did he rediscover 7 'lost' bhp from shot plugs???

I've had OEM plugs, denso iridium tough's and now bosch super 4's. If i'm honest i don't think there much in them, you always think/feel a slight improvemnet when putting new plug's in anyway but there definatly wasn't much differance. Saying that when my AGU with remap went on the rolling road it had the denso's in and achieved 199 (corrected to 193bhp) which i was pleased with as i had no other mod's. Wether or not that was the plug's rollers or just a good day i can't say though.

My opinion is the bosch plug's seem pretty good value for money so far. Can be had for £16 a set (got mine for £8) and reading up on bosch website seem to be well designed.

mmmm probably  as a worn plug thats covered loads of miles and is in need of a change certainly wont have the performance of a brand new plug even if they are uprated

Exactly.  If the original plugs were new as well, then that would be a great gain. :)

I have no idea when the plugs were last changed in my Golf, a good couple of years ago I should imagine!  I may look into some of these soon, £12 each is a tad steep though.
