How to identify a "90" spec fusebox
« on: 05 February 2009, 17:43 »
Hello!

Okay, so i uderstand mk2 gti from 1990 onwards have a different fusebox.
How can I identify the earlier spec fuseboxes??
or tell the difference at a glance?

Reason is, I might be going to look at a mk2 16v for a friend.
Its a 1989 G reg and he says its a "90 spec", i know there are slight differences like the coolant tank etc

Look forward to your thougths..

aye look for the hazard switch on top of the column, most other 90-spec bits can be easily chucked on, but the wiring is harder to do.
The coolant tank is another, round one = 90spec.  To convert to a 90spec tank is quite hard as you have to grind/drill the old bracket off and mount the new one in its place

late '89s were '90 spec, I heard that from August '89 onwards some cars were '90 spec and some were pre-90?

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

correct. august 1989 was the swap to 90 spec, its 1989, but they still called them 90 spec.

yep positive, round only on 90 spec, square is pre-90.

As said '90 spec' actually came around in 1989, but VW would have had to work fast to get an 1989 90 spec made and shipped to the UK in time to be sold before 1990.  You also got a fair few pre-90s being registed on a G plate since they didnt sell quickly enoguh, so the line can be quite blured!

I have a 90 spec g reg driver that i have just vr6'd. Thought it was wierd as 90spec makes you thin 90 onwards.
