front brake pads!!!???
« on: 02 February 2009, 13:12 »
GTI went stright through its MOT today! well chuffed! anyway i had a couple of advisorys.

front b pads are low - i did the rears a few months back and it was a right arse of a job as i didnt have the correct wind back tool for the pistons - are they the same on the fronts?

also had an advisory on the front mcpherson strutt mount? do they mean the top mounts when saying this? getting some coilies in a month and was gonna change to VR6 top mounts anyway so i persume that should solve it?

cheers

Just did the fronts on sat on the GTI. It was easy ish.....soak them bolts in WD-40(or the likes) overnight.

Wheel off- two bolts at the back - clip - pads out/ pads in - reverse order. Better than the back, they can be a pain.

I used a G-clamp worked a treat. (Remember to take the lid off the brake fluid container.

front pads don't need a windy tool.. there normal calipers, and the mount would be the top mount (why do mot testers call things by odd names?)

glad she passed

if you’ve done the rears you wont have any problems with the fronts. the pistons just push straight back its not like the rears with the push back twist thing.

the only problem I came across was the grub screws (they were a pain) and had to be drilled out.

just be very careful not to knock the ABS sensors.

all the best

You can get a piston windy tool to push the piston back in aswell....iirc

As for the ABS pic. See the two wires going into the back of the disk? Thats the ABS.

I use some big plier things when doing the front!!....and swapping pads you shouldn't need to go near the abs!!
