that tutorial looks like a real ball ache, though looks easier than installing an S3 intercooler

I got one from the dealer. The grey is closer to the DSG surround than the dash trim. Pic of mine below:-

Spot-on description!

Why didn't you fit the surround too?  It really finishes the job off, and seems to 'brighten up' an otherwise dull drab dark plastic black hole!

It wasn't too bad to fit, the worst bit was getting the old cover to unclip. The oeml.us guide was very handy.

Yup, that link is very, very handy. :afro:

Yes, that is because they were standard on the original Mk5 GTIs, but were ditched from model year 2006 for those cheapo black plastic jobbies - penny pinching VW!

BTW, what "model year" (rather than "registration year") is yours Alan?  The 10th digit of your VIN tells you?

that tutorial looks like a real ball ache,

You are joking!  A little fiddly, and requiring a little patience and dexterity of the fingers - but that is a job that you could probably do in your lunch break (providing you had the correct tools ).  Put it another way - if you can change a battery on a dinky ladies watch, then you could do that job too!

though looks easier than installing an S3 intercooler

Yup - to the meek, the S3 i/c looks like major surgery - but if you have ever worked on something like a Cummins V903 14.7 litre V8 'big-cam' (with the original camshaft operated "unit injector", long before VW invented the PD TDIs) - then nothing really phases you! :afro:

I thought that the brushed surround might be a little too much "bling"  :undecided: Maybe later on........

I've taken that spot apart a few times now looking for a live/test fitting someing/etc and it's actually easy as hell. Literally just pop off the gearshift surround, undo a few screws, pull out tray, done.
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3
