Cigarette/Cubby... Brushed Alloy Lid?
« on: 29 January 2009, 20:45 »
Longshot really guys,

As you may know early GTI’s had a matching alloy cigarette/cubby lid. On the later cars they are plain black plastic. Does anyone know where the lids can be purchased... dealer, eBay? Do you know the model number and does it snap into position.

Any info gratefuuly received... Hotrod

I'm pretty sure that TM Tuning and oempl.us carry them. I have a sticker on mine that was a few € on ebay, looks the biz:
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

Official parts from VW stealer or TPS:

1K0 857 351 F 75T - trim cover, ashtray lid, lacqured bright grey metal
1K0 863 487 F 75T - trim surround, ashtray, lacqured bright grey metal

Those are not absolutely identical to the brushed aluminium trim strips of the GTI, but they are fairly close, and unless you were really looking for any differences, you probably wouldn't notice.

A Torx Tx20 driver is needed, and they are a bit fiddly to fit - so if, say, you can remove a door card without braking anything, you should be able to master these too.

Mine matches it really well. Installing was easy, just put on the sticker. It's easier if you take out the cubby, but I didn't remove it and got on fine. Looks good, nice reflection and brushed look effect. I'm very happy with it.

I got one from the dealer. The grey is closer to the DSG surround than the dash trim. Pic of mine below:-

It wasn't too bad to fit, the worst bit was getting the old cover to unclip. The oeml.us guide was very handy.
