Anyone care to explain whats happened here?
« on: 25 January 2009, 18:40 »
No real problems here, just curious.
Normally starting the car involves a brisk twist of the key to start the the starter motor, following by the engine firing engine to life.

Because i was faffing about being bit of a tool, i started it this same way earlier today, but then stalled it about 10 seconds later. The next time i had to have the key turned all the way for a good 5-6 seconds before i eventually got the engine started. Any ideas what it was happening here? The starter sounded fine, there was just no ignition for, like i said, about 5-6 seconds.

Most cars do it when you stall it, then don't immediately fire back up. I think its Gods way of making fun at you so when its bad enough you've stalled at a green light, you don't get moving until its red

On a more realistic note, I'd hazard a guess that its just because of unburnt fuel in the cyl. so its just a teeeeeny bit flooded.

What car is it? Injection? Carb? Couls have suffered a little from flooding if it's a carb.

full throttel then cranck it.

put's efi enignes in to flood clear mode,  no fuel for 5 seconds or on carbs it just lets it draw fresh air/fuel mix through  quicker

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

could it not be your cold start valve? If you start your engine and it cuts out then you try again it doesn't work straight away??

I doubt its that as it *generally* always starts up first time, even in this weather.
It was only after a sequence of spazzy events caused by yours truly that made it difficult to start on this occasion. Was just curious as to what had happened that made it such a b*tch to start on this occasion.

The flooding the engine theory seems plausable enough, altho didnt think it was as easy to do with injection engines.

It's flooded, don't floor it, you will just pump more fuel into the engine and prolong the starting process.

Cold starting puts more than enough fuel into the cylinders.

on efi cars   if ecu  sees the throttel to be wide open then  crancking signal arrive  it puts it into flood clear mode.   still sparks  but no fuel is injected for 5 second unless  rpm signal gose above crancking speed.  then all continues as normal

wide open throttel works on carb cars some it works better than others tho mostly down to the carb minellways liked  full throttel then key.   with k jet  don't really make any differance what you do
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
