Smoke on idle

Hello got a Problem with my 1990 8v gti, i was giving it a bit of a thrashing on my way to see my girlfriend, then when i was at hers openin the gates i noticed black smoke coming out of the exhaust on tick over  ???
its gone off since then but stinks all the time now
any ideas what ive done?

Black smoke sounds like carbon being burn't off matey - was there any hint of blue in the colour ???

nah didnt seem to be just a steady flow of black smoke  ???
parked it up for a week or so after that, been driving it for a few days now and no smoke just nasty old car smell :(

r u sure theres no sign of a clear/blue hint of smoke cus ur motor cud b like mine and b burning some oil and the smell of is certainly nasty

no, no blue thats what i thougth at first maybe the oil seals had gone or something but its fine now, just stinks, only done 100k miles which is nothing to an 8v engine  ???

thats very true mate 100k is noting to them mine has 180k and its still goin strong apart from burning the odd bitta oil its all good. chris check ur head gasket for n e wee oil leaks cus they could b where the nasty smell is coming from bits of oil cud b dropin down onto ur inlet manifold and burnin

probably just carbon burning off

if anything run it up to normal temp, then stand at the back while someone tramps on & off the accelerator

only other thing that springs to mind is that its overfuelling

that was also one of my thoughts over fueling but there was too much smoke for it to be that i think, will have another check for oil leaks everywhere, just put a new sump and new rocker gasket on when i got it, maybe i have managed to get the cork twisted on the rocker cover

Valve stems and oil seals are worn ...a common problem.  :-\
