1.6 having 'issues'...
« on: 12 January 2009, 22:06 »
Hi all....

Before you say it, yes I have used the search facility, but am still none the wiser!

My wife has a 1.6, W reg - 65K, full VWSH, last serviced a couple of months back.

It's started to have a few issues that's causing me a bit of a noodle scratch... So, anyone who correctly guesses the fault gets a shiny gold star and beer if you happen to be passing.

The faults:

Sometimes the temp gauge just about gets of the back stop, but doesn't get any further - majority of the time this works normally
Sometimes when slowing down, going down the gears with the clutch depressed the engine revs to about 5 and sticks, then stalls
After the stall, the car wont restart for about 3-5 minutes

The above 2 problems only happen from cold.

Please let it be something cheap for me to fix!  :undecided:

If there was a fault, would a light not come on?

If not... Who here likes beer and lives near the Peterborough area who also happens to own VAG com...?

No it will just store a fault code - things like coilpacks can threw up lights

smells a bit like crank sensor.. vagcom will show it as engine speed sensor, and vw parts dept. know it as an impulse sensor

as said.. vagcom it first

Will one of these cheaper code readers do the same thing, or do i need to find someone with VAGcom?

Right, so with the ever so confusing instructions of the code reader, I have the following codes for the engine (and what the little booklet says they are):

00522 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor-G62
00668 - Battery Power Voltage Supply (Terminal 3)
00537 - Oxygen Sensor Control

So... what the heck is wrong with the little motor? Answers on a postcard...

Seriously though, 3 codes surely = £ouch? My wife has got fed up with the car so has stolen the keys to my 2.slow leaving me with hers. It stalled on the way to work this morning leaving me blocking the road for a while until i could get it started again, so, would really like to get the bits to fix it today. Probably from the local stealers i'm guessing?

Do all these bits need changing? Are they causing the problem? How hard are they to change over? Most importantly, how much will they cost me?

Any help will be gratefully received... especially if it's before lunch so I can get to the stealers!

thanks!

The oxygen sensor went on my MG ZR160 and it will cause the emmissions to be high so will fail the MOT not sure about the other 2.
Golf SOLD. Replaced with a Yamaha Raptor 660 quad and loving it. This will be replaced in August with a Raptor 700. Sold the quad now got a Vectra GSI 2.5 V6 and its the nuts.

it'll store codes from day 1 so you need to clear them then go for a drive and see which ones come back

Temp sender is a common problem though, and would explain the grief the car has been giving you.. so swap that, dead easy to do (when the engine is COLD).. i paid about 12 quid for mine form vw but apparently they're more like 25-30 now.

I can't see how the other fault codes would be causing the issues you described, so fingers crossed the temp sender will sort it.
