The brake lights do work with the ignition off. ~Take off the bulb holder in the back and check all hte connections, then check on the bulb connection itself, could be shorting cos of a funny bulb, or a funny holder. Obviously do both sides! Then follow the wire through to find out where the earth is located (left hand side behind the panel) Check they all attched to it properly etc... If you have a high mount, or any modifications check this too.

If this fails, check the operation of the switch located behind the pedal. Could be broken and when you break, it shorts? Could also be the fuse box itself... Finally check the potential across the terminals while someone applies the brakes, and the current.

A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids it.

I found a DIY cable from the old fuel cut off switch, were the previous owner had attached 1 of the leads to the brake switch for some reason?

Iv disconnected it & it seems to have stopped blowing fuses & EVEN better the MPG reading on the MFA is working now  ;D

the fuses only blow if more than 10amp gets pumped down the wires.......... or theres a short circuit!
or the bulbs are pulling more than 10amp..........
sometimes people put a 10amp in place of a 15amp.....
it lasts a while and burns out slowly!
looked in the book the brake lights are 10amp.....so your ok.....

I checked my manual to see what fuse should be there & it is meant to be a 10amp, but on post 88-89 models i'm sure the fuse is a 30amp.  It must have more stuff attached to the later models  ???

Thanx for you replys  ;D
