I normally do 120nm, which I got from a VW workshop manual at some point.

Thanks guys.  Tried to jack the car last night in the snow and while I found the rear jacking point, I couldn't find the front ones - I thought I did but then heard a crack when trying to jack it up and decided not to proceed any further   A bit of the plastic cracked underneath .

isn't there little triangles on the underneath of the side skirt to indicate where to jack it up? or are you not jacking it up for the side?

No, not for the GTI.  There are small semi-circle cuts along the rail underneath - behind the trim.  I found the rear one easy enough, but the fronts were not so east to identify.  Had the wheels put back on by a garage today and looked where they lifted the front of the car but it seemed to be the same as where I did it from?!
