clutch release mechanism

i have a serious problem with my car had to call rac to be towed home...possible clutch release mechanism failure...i can start car fine but when i press the clucth it stays on the floor and doesn't come back up unless i pull up with my foot andits not possible to select any gear,is it had to fix i have seen it in the haynes manual i have and its spanner rating is 4 lol...is it the mechanism thats gone wrong any help would be a great help

since you dont say what car you have, I'll take a guess at it being a 1.6-1.8 model, non-G60.  If so, have a good read of this link:

If you're lucky its a cable, release finger or bearing problem, which can be fixed with the box on the car.  If you're unlucky you have a hole thru the release plate, which is a gearbox off job!

ah the car is an 89 8v digifant..at the end of the gearbox is a plate can this be reusued if not where can i obtain 1 ??

mine is not like that..its a pre 89 digifant and the end piece is held by 4 bolts and has a lattice pattern on it and is sorta square no green thing in site    :huh: and looks like its a removable piece ??

This may seem obvious, but have you checked that the pedal is operating the arm on the gearbox. Have someone press the pedal whilst you check in the engine bay.
Every time the symptoms you describe have happened to me it has been a broken cable. Check the simple things before fearing the worst and most expensive!

this has been checked by myself and the rac fella when i was recovered,he was really helpful plus he like the car  :smiley: had 1 before i think he said....the lever on the gearbox is like its gettin stuck and not going back like it should.??

no its a 5speed gti mk2 8v digifant,end of the gear box has a different piece on the end that looks like its removable as its held on with 4 bolts...

I have a clutch release problem too after fitting new clutch.
