Speedometer Needle Dance
« on: 16 December 2008, 00:15 »
After yest morning, http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=100024.0 ,
I have noticed that my speedometer needle seems to "dance/tremble" between 0-10 and eases higher/faster i go
Any ideas what is causing this all off a sudden?   :undecided:
Speedo cable loose?

Thanks in advance

Isn't it your cable wearing out ie the nylon cog on the end perhaps? Just a guess

Often a sign of needing lubrication.

Hehe, mine is exactly the same !! 30 mph can be about 27-33 mph.

I would bother to fix it, but I don't want to remove the speedo cable from the box again, I don't think I'll be as lucky this time round - I know I'll end up dropping the cog.

Ha, looks like i aint the only one then
Where can i find the cog? Anyone got diagrams?
As for lubing, what should i use?
Yep feels weird looking at the needle jumping around (in addition to the ever persistent coolant light flashes!)

I had this on my driver, was due to the speedo cable being dried out and dirt ingress due to chunks of the outer slieve being missing.  I cleaned it up as best I could and sprayed WD40 down all the gaps.  Then I wiped off the excess and taped up the gaps in the cable outser sheithing, after a couple of days the speedo was fixed :)

I don't get a flashing coolant light, just bouncy revs and bouncy speedo - but they don't really phase me.

only downside to living with bouncy speedo is not being able to tell just how fast you are going through speed cameras
