Once again, I have the 'all fabric' seats.
It definately is not a ringer, I would more than happily give it to someone to check it all out thoroughly, like mentioned before, VW have been over it already with a fine tooth comb and found nothing to worry about, they just could not explain it. They first of all mentioned that it could be a ringer but after looking over it they could not find anything at all that was out of place, apart from the obvious

As far as i remember, the rainbow was predominantly a 16v thing. But you could always spec your seat fabric along with what wheels you wanted and paint colour etc. The all fabric seats (i.e. no vinyl on the sides and back) where only available from 1991 onwards.

But I thought that all run out models (8V included) had a bee sting aerial and half tinted rear clusters ?

This may have been mentioned, but i didn't see it:

The original D reg car may have been reshelled and the owner has told the DVLA of the change in chassis number, therefore the v5 would match the body. It is possible that the DVLA were not told of the engine change, therefore it kept the original plate rather than being given a Q plate.
However, the person that did the body swap obviously didn't keep the old engine and other parts from the original D reg car and just left the donor car as it was.

I probably haven't explained that very well and it may well be complete bollocks, but it is a possibilty and makes sense in my head anyway!

You mean effectively putting a D'reg plate onto a 90 spec car? Because thats what i was thinking too.

Are the windows marked with a reg anywhere? Also, doesnt the sticker with the paint code also have an engine number or am i misinformed?

Paint code sticker from boot is gone, a lot of people rip them off as they dont like them stupidly...
That just doesnt make sense though, why replate a newer car with an older reg... you loose loads of value of the car, I certainly wouldnt for one.
I am still trying to get a hold of the V5, moved recently and lost the form although there isnt many places for me to look anymore so cant be far away from finding it...  he says
