so how traceable is a remap ?
its not like theres a chip visable or something ? how does an insurance company check it ?

Very easy to trace, simple interogation of ECU.  More likely to check for this if the car is non standard in other ways ie bigger alloys, lowered suspension.  They know what to look for as they see it all the time.  Insurance co's will use any excuse not to pay out - especially the cheaper ones.  They can be cheap for a reason!  Don't give them an excuse.....

if you do happen to mo someone down they will rip your car to pieces just to look for any reason at all not to pay out . like someone else said stuff like alloys will trigger them to look under the bonnet and test the ecu . then it prisson for you mate bye

By the way before declaring that you mod your car but you don't inform your insurance I would think twice as I know some insurance companies have people now who's job it is to read forums like this and try to find out people who mod cars but don't declare it.  At the end of the day it is a very simple process,

You mod it you pay the insurance, you can't afford it then don't mod!!
