taking sub out of sub box

Ok I wanted to take my sub out of the box and mount it in the boot to save room.
I remember on here a while ago someone did something simelar. And someone else said that their sub shouldn't be taken out of the box because of some reason and that it would most likely sound crap.

Just wondering is there a general rule as to weather or not your sub can be used with out a box. I.e a certain type of sub or something? Cheers

were are you planning on mounting it ? you can get a "freeair" sub , but it would never be as good as a boxed sub. Every sub has its own ideal box dimensions

Yeah. What I was going to do was get some wood, make a support and then have a big piece of wood that lays ontop of that. So in effect I have a false floor then cut a hole In that and mount the sub so that the sub is flush with the floor.

Different subs suit different enclosures.

Generally a sub designed to play in a box of a particuliar size won't sound very good as a IB (infinite baffle or free air).

Best off to sell your sub and buy one suitable to IB.

also if you go for a sealed box they take up less space-less low bass but very punchy

If you're going to mount it in MDF anyway you could put it in the wheel well in a specially designed enclosure. You could get about 1.25 cu ft of space there and it would sound very good, plus leave you all the boot space.

Or buy one of the subs that go under the front seats so saves you all the room!

my friend has an escort  and he took his double sub box apart and mounted them in the floor on a raised boot floor and it really has affected the sound no punch/thud at all now it just sounds like he has good bass from normal speakers

You need to be very careful here like mate. The sub box is what gives it its sound. If you are going to take it out of its box its gonna sound crap. If you are gonna mount it in the boot with Nee box you need to be careful and might need to mount some damping material to catch some of the sound, or the bass will just over ride everything, sounding sh!t.
It will look good, but you need to have it angled the right way too, to direct the bass, or again it Will just take over everything.
