I really don't think it's any longer than manual for the switch over...
I'm happy I'm in a DSG again.. Scirocco DSG A5 manual then back in to the Mk6 gti DSG
Never want manual again when you want to relax on the commute there's nothing better than sticking it to D and point!!
As for the kickdown with practise you'll get to know how much juice to give your right foot...

It's a love hate thing for me. Driving it around town and work it's very good, very smooth.  But where I hate it a lot is when you want to pull away in 5th or 4th but want it a little quicker than normal BANG into second and all hell breaks lose.

It certainly is faster that way for overtaking, no second guessing the best gear to be in but I dont want the constant gear changes when i put the foot down slightly.

When in manual mode it's almost perfect but it will overide manual if you put your foot right down all the way to 'kick-down'

Don't get me wrong, DSG is a clever piece of kit but I won't be getting it for sure, I lose too much driving pleasure from having it.

Don't put your foot all the way down to kickdown then.

You could always have your gearbox remapped. I was reading about the AMD map. Basically in manual mode, it gives you full control. No kickdown and no auto up change, so you can bounce off the rev limiter if you want. It obviously won't let you select 1st at 60mph, but it is supposed to let the car do what you want it to do, not the other way round.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

This is how the RS3 is as standard in M mode - it's a shame VAG can't do the same with the Golf GTi and R when in Manual mode IMHO.

Back on topic   I've always found the DSG a little slower than a manual to change from reverse to 1st, but not by much.
