changing abs ecu ?

Handbrake light? That means bias isn't working.

yeah could be back end locks up sometimes getting used to it now   what does that involve so it might not actually be the main pump after all? bloody vw  

My handbrake light comes on after a couple of minutes and then stays on. So then I guess I need to repair the abs ECU then?

this is what mine does but sometimes it wont come on for half a mile or so which is when its most dangerous as i have hardly no brakes  

Yours really does seem to point towards ecu  seeing as its making your brakes not work,i would try driving with it unplugged until you do the job at least then the ecu cant tell the pump to kick in stopping you from braking as normal.

sounds like a plan does that work lol will basically be like no abs I take it? but will hopefully not try to kill me all the time

A failed ecu won't cause brakes not to work. It will just not control pressure applied to front and rear wheels.

ABS light tells you ABS has a fault and it's disabled. If handbrake light is on too I'd be very careful when driving. Rear will try to overtake front if you brake hard as weight shifts forward and off rear wheels.

Unplugging abs will be the same. It won't help you much.

When i say it causeing the brakes not to work,i think the ecu is controlling the pressure applied but for mikes case its stopping him from braking sometimes as if the abs is kicking in in a non abs situation ,mine did this some times no matter how hard i pressed the pedal it would not let me stop quickly and nearly shot out of a couple of junctions,this stopped when ecu was unplugged but as said brake bias will not work.

Ok yea I get ya. Sometimes,  Abs pump will operate too when brake pedal not even pressed.
