rear knocking after shocks change...

I think i've found the issue.  the o/s/r wheel rocks top to bottom when pulled.  the n/s/r not so muvh.  thats bearings isn't it?

Yep, bearing has had it.

Garage have adjusted the bearings (local vw speciallist), as they are adjustable apparently?  It sounds like they've just tightend the nut and put a new split pin in.... Hmmmm.

Knocking continues....., but less noise and actual vibration/feedback in the car.  Mainly on acceleration/braking.

I'll check it out again tonight and see, but suspension continues to feel solid - at least I can't make it knock.  So I guess either the bearings have had it and new ones required, or maybe beam bushes.  There is not much left thats not new...

Long shot but are you sure the exhaust is not toucing the rear beam.

There is a different amount of play between o/s/r and o/s/l.  It was fine immediatly after it was ajusted but now (24 hours later) its back to where it was - so something is not right.

Still... Back in the garage again today....

FIXED.

The rear part of the exhaust wasn't installed correctly and was knocking.  I think the bearings adjustment helped too though.

You know there is always a small bit of play, yes?

A VERY small amount of play, pretty much zero, and the wheel should spin smoothly.
