Given that the retailer lets say Tesco makes 4.7ppl on diesel, how can they sustain constantly offering 5P off a litre? Surely that equates to a 0.3ppl loss?
Because the tax is a percentage and thus selling it cheaper means less tax taken?

Yeah but does it not get recorded that it was sold at a reduced price per litre? But as Steve said, it's still that extra 10 quid someone may have spent to get that £3 off.
It's all planned, any BIG DEALS or sales is total crap and marketing ploys to earn them money. They wouldn't spend money on avertisements etc on 5p off or buy one get one free etc. or BIG SALES only to further lose money because normally they'd earn that extra £3, would they?
